Our enduring, glorious, yet complicated history as Jews has shown that our survival and our successes are the results, in part, of our willingness and ability to work together toward our common goals. Our traditional Pesach (Passover) Festival celebration, a defining moment for all of us through the ages – the vital story of our people retold through every generation – is a living narrative of our coming together as a family, as a community, and as a nation.

As we welcome the beautifully warm and vibrant February weather in our corner of Paradise, as other environs experience a different version of winter, we have a special opportunity to celebrate with our Temple family the Festival of Tu B’Shevat (Jewish New Year for Trees) as we dedicate the planting of our beautiful new oak trees soon to be gracing our grounds.

After the return of the Jewish People to Jerusalem and the rebuilding of the Temple during the sixth year of Darius (515 BCE), our history credits Ezra the Scribe with the reintroduction of the Torah in Jerusalem. Profound changes occurred in our culture and religion, most notably through the establishing of the Great Assembly, sometimes referred to as a gathering of 120 scribes, sages, and prophets. This time of great change in our heritage signaled the development of Rabbinic Judaism, marking the passing from an era of prophets to the time of the Rabbis. The Great Assembly directly led to the introduction of many aspects of our Tradition still embraced in contemporary Judaism, including the practice of Torah reading, the Amidah, and the Feast of Purim.

Jewish Year of 5772, a year that our tradition tells us represents the time from the Sixth Day of Creation – the beginning of humanity.
