Adult Learning

A touch of S'fat Emet, the Hasidic Torah commentary we learn on Shabbat mornings. A bit of Heschel's God in Search of Man, that we study Wednesdays at noon. A hint of how to pray without a prayer book, and responses if not answers to whatever questions you might have about Jewish spirituality. Come and learn.

Temple Israel provides abundant opportunities for learning.

Listed below are our ongoing adult learning programs. Be sure to check the Upcoming Events page for all the latest learning opportunities. Email if you have questions about adult learning.

Saturday Morning Torah Study

Saturday morning is more than Torah study. For those who wish, the morning often begins at 9 o'clock with Torah Yoga, lasting 1/2 hour.

At 9:30 we have bagels and coffee. The morning blessings are at 9:45, and then Torah Study begin in earnest. Lately we have been reading The Language of Truth: The Torah Commentary of Sefat Emet, a Hasidic neo-Kabbalist work. Then at 11:00 a.m. we continue our prayer service, which includes Talmud study.

You are welcome to come for any part or all of this Shabbat morning experience.

Wednesday Learn with the Rabbi

Every Wednesday at noon during the school year we have a "Learn with The Rabbi" session. The group is currently reading God in Search of Man, by Abraham Joshua Heschel. One hour of philosophy and theology and an exchange of ideas goes by with lightning speed. If you wish, bring a brown bag lunch -- coffee is provided. Missed out on previous sessions? Join us anyway; we'll have you up to speed in no time.

Sunday Adult Learning

Whenever religious school is in session on Sunday, there will be learning opportunities for adults from 10:00 a.m. to noon. You don't have to have a child in Religious School to take advantage of our Family Beit Midrash. The offerings may be sessions led by Rabbi Chefitz, guest speakers, or a study lead by congregrants.

On Sunday morning our children learn, our adults learn, and our children see adults learning and enjoying the process.

Temple Israel provides a truly unique experience of cross generational learning.

The Havurah Setting

Our system of havurot (fellowships) creates a relaxed learning situation. Basically, havurot are small groups of friends who have similar interests and who wish to pursue that interest in both a social setting and from a Jewish perspective. One example of havurah in action at Temple Israel is the Central Havurah. This group meets once a month in the evening to discuss a pre-determined topic -- sometimes a contemporary issue connected with Judaism, sometimes a particular phase of Jewish history, literature, or music. Another havurah, Young Families, plans bowling parties, park outings and even camping trips. These occasions often conclude with a Havdalah Service and supper. A third group is the Ru'ach Havurah. For the full details of this very active havurah, please click here.

Members of Temple Israel are most welcome to join the existing Havurot. Alternatively, new havurot can be formed to accommodate any group with a special interest. Although havurot are encouraged and empowered to set their own course of activity, the Rabbi is available for guidance. The Temple office assists the havurot administratively with publicity, mailings etc. You may call the Temple office at 305-573-5900 for information or send us an eMail letting us know of your interest.
